It evolved out of a friendship-two women
leaning on each other for support.In 1991 when long-time friends, Suzanne Mintz and Cindy Fowler, took a weekend respite from
caregiving responsibilities. Suzanne's from her husband with MS and Cindy's from her mom with Parkinson's, they discovered
the similarities in their issues and concerns, despite the differences in their caregiving situations. They began publishing
the newsletter TAKE CARE! in 1992 and in 1993, when Mintz and Fowler recognized the common bond between them and decided to
do something positive with their grief, NFCA was founded.

AFA
was founded in February 2002 by a consortium of organizations to fill the gaps existed on a national level to assure quality
of care and excellence in service to individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses, and their caregivers
and families. From the beginning, AFA's objective has been to "UNITE ORGANIZATIONS" from coast-to-coast that are dedicated
to meeting educational, social, emotional, and practical needs of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses including their families and caregivers.

Their primary mission is to locate and
rescue missing persons. It has established many partnerships with local law enforcement to help save money and time for taxpayers.
The organziation also has many partnerships that strengthens the awareness of their technologies and services. Project Lifesaver
deploys specially trained teams with the most reliable technology available quickly to locate and return wandering adults
and childrens to their families and caregivers.

Care Connection is a free teleconferencing service designed for caregivers of
individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses. Join with up to 150 caregivers on the phone for an hour at a time.
It's part-support group, part educational, the sessions are a valuable mix of coaching, guest speakers, Q and As-and lots
of sharing.

HO'OPA'A MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
The Ho'opa'a (To Take Charge) honors mentorship experience is an opportunity
for any students or teenagers (in school or out of school) to learn about caregiving and also to
teach them how to teach other students/teenagers about various diseases, basic caregiving, and new skills.
It will be an opportunity for students/teenagers to work under the guidance of professionals and
to obtain theoretical and hand-ons experience.
PURPOSE
1. Acquisition of knowledge and skills.
2. Development of appropriate work ethics and standards.
3. Enhancement of self-esteem, self-confidence, and maturity.
4. Observation of a professional role model.
5. Opportunity to practice and apply learned skills.

The Hawaii Caregivers Institute for Social Responsibility
(HCISR) is a uniquely new organization to create new resources within the community, especially in the underserved and rural
communities to include culturally and evidenced-based training curriculum (classroom and hands-on), multi-generational approach,
mentorship, and ongoing personal and professional development to continously provide effective care giving.
